New York Or Bust

Here is my question: I see a lot of uproar about how much an agent’s
location really matters. What I’d like to know is how much a writer’s
location matters to the agents. For example, if a writer is located
outside
the big publishing countries such as USA and England.

It’s most likely a silly question, so feel free to be snarky if you
answer it. ;)

It's actually a not a silly question at all. What was silly was my original post, which skimmed your email a little too quickly and I answered the wrong question. Gack, Nanowrimo!

The answer is: No. We do not care if you live on the Upper West Side or in Tehran.

The question was:

Do AGENTS care where WRITERs live?

I've had a couple of rejections from the UK saying that they don't represent writers outside the country. Or maybe my writing sucks and it's an easy way to say 'no'.

See, this just goes to show that a lot depends on the individual agent. Miss Snark does not like to represent people who live outside the US. She may make an exception for Canada, I'm not sure. The agent the Rejector works for doesn't care. Vive la difference. The only way around this is to follow another Snarkism - query widely.

Anonni-mouse, I'm guessing that if they said they don't represent writers outside the UK, that is exactly what they meant. Try someone else. And check their website first to see if they specify that kind of thing.

I live in the UK and my agent is in New York. I know some places say they won't consider writers from abroad, and I can understand why, but there's always an exception to the rule.

Your experience does not relate to all UK agents. Some mention on their websites that they don't represent overseas authors, but if you check the lists of others, you will see they do have clients in other parts of the world.

Unfortunately that particular agent didn't have a web site so I had to go by the Writers' & Artists' Yearbook, which didn't mention that particular detail! Yes, am querying elsewhere, with a special love for agents who already have clients from outside the UK.
